With version 5.0 of our blogs, a new system for the organization of the blog layout has been introduced, that which utilises widgets. Previous versions were based around the concept of portlets, which while similar to widgets in function, were limited in how they could be organized in respect to each other and the overall blog design.
The new widget system is far more capable and efficient than the portlets one, but it is also a new concept, which might prove to be a difficult transition for some users to make. For them, we have created the Widget Switch utility, which allows users to switch back and forth between the two different systems. It is to be noted that the portlet system is outdated, and will likely receive no more updates (excluding possible serious issues of security and such). For this reason, this mechanism shouldn't be seen as providing an alternative between the two systems, but more as an attempt to allow a smooth transition from one to the other, transition during which the user can get familiar with the system at his or her own pace, without being rushed.
Also, this mechanism is only available to blogs created before the release of version 5.0. All blogs created after that date will not be able to switch back to the Portlets system.
To make the switch, in your blog's version 5.0 administration section select the Extra tab, and then click on Widget Switch. Depending on which system you are currently using, the only button on that page will be labeled either Turn off widgets and revert back to using portlets, or Turn off portlets and revert back to using widgets. Simply click it, and the new changes will take effect. You can do this however many times you want with no kind of limitation.
There is a function on that page to allow you to convert your bookmark and html portlets to widgets. Click the copy over my bookmark and custom portlets to widgets please.
